Gefen Helps Create Reality Deck at Stony Brook University, the World’s First 1.5 Billion Pixel Totally Immersive Display of 416 HD LCD Monitors in a Surround Layout


Munich, January 2014 – Members of the Stony Brook University (SBU) Computer Science Department based on Long Island, New York, together with Nelson Engineering, joined forces to design a four-wall surround installation of high resolution LCD displays with real-world immersive capabilities. The project director, Arie Kaufman, and his colleagues have been contemplating such a facility for the past decade. Two years ago they secured the funding to develop and build the Reality Deck, and the decade long dream became a reality.

The goal was relatively simple: tile more than 400 high definition LCD displays along four walls so the user, standing in the room, would have a realistic view of large scale, scientific, computerized data, as if he or she were literally immersed within the data, viewing it from all 360 degree angles.

“It’s really a stunning environment in which the pixel density is sufficiently high to saturate the resolving capabilities of the human eye over a very large working area, which makes the Reality Deck facility particularly suitable for scientific visualization of very big data,” explained Ken Gladky, Director of Operations, Visualization Lab IT Manager, Department of Computer Science (CS) at SBU. “The immersive layout allows us to develop unique user interfaces and to push the boundaries of human-computer interaction.”

Ongoing development of Reality Deck applications happens through collaboration among a number of research groups at SBU, the CS department and outside researchers who contract the Reality Deck facility. Reality Deck is a permanent installation in the Center for Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) in Stony Brook University’s Research & Development Park.

In developing the immersive visualization display, the team had to combine a number of custom, state-of-the-art systems. “The main challenge came from the sheer number of pixels (1.5 billion) that needed to be generated and transmitted to the individual displays in a reliable and cost-effective way,” said Gladky.

The designers opted for a high density, 18-node GPU cluster with each node driving up to 24 displays at 2560x1440 resolution each. The cluster is also located in a separate, adjacent machine room and required video to be transmitted over cables up to 100 feet in length.

“That’s where Gefen entered the picture,” said Gladky.

The 416 monitors needed to connect to the GPU cluster in the adjacent machine room. “We worked with Gefen to identify what type of cables could be used, and explored both optical and copper options along with the type of connector to be used: dual link DVI or DisplayPort.”

The Reality Deck team selected an assortment of Gefen DisplayPort Extreme Fiber Optic extenders in 75 (23m) and 100 (30m) foot distances. “The physical distance between the monitors and the GPU cluster necessitated a type of video cable that would work perfectly over very long distances,” said Gladky.

In Reality Deck, displays had to support very high video resolutions of 2560x1440 to ensure an absolutely pristine transmission of video with no degradation.

“The long optical DisplayPort cables from Gefen allowed us to design Reality Deck exactly as we had envisioned,” said Gladky. “By extending the displays from the GPU cluster, we significantly lowered the cooling requirements and the noise level for the work area of the facility.”

Now, after a decade of conceptual design and development led by SBU’s Professor Arie Kaufman and his team of computer science professors and engineers, Reality Deck is fully operational. “It is the largest resolution ever built—the second largest resolution is 5 times smaller—and offers the most original visualization platform for large-scale scientific data visualization and for research into novel user interaction methods,” added Gladky. “We are currently working with a dozen internal and external collaborators to develop the next scientific breakthrough, thanks, in part, to Reality Deck.”

Digital Signage at Denver Center for the Performing Arts



Digital signage creator of Gefen makes for more interaction for theater visitors.

September 18, 2012 - The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) offers theater goers all the year a multitude of attractions and is instructing actors and performers in the academic field. Due to the high rising numbers of guests and prospective visitors, the Center contemplated installing additional communication technology so that the guests could be informed of the variety of offers. Howard Steele from Technology Plus Consulting was commissioned to integrate the 13 digital signage creators from Gefen into the complex.

The large number of guests that gather in the lobby before the show made the operator contemplating about new communications technologies, which could not only entertain the guests, but also inform them and point out the sponsors of the institution. Howard Steele from Technology Plus Consulting was therefore commissioned to implement a digital signage solution in the lobby. Steele therefore got in contact with Cliff Wernet, the regional manager of the audio/video distributer BTX. Wernet proposed installing the Gefen Digital Signage Creator (DSC).

The Gefen DSC combines high-grade hardware with proprietary software, in order ­to create innovative digital signage content with demanding features. The intuitive layout program is compatible with all Windows programs and enables users to upload and receive video such as music streams, to pull RSS-feeds or live video streams from the internet, and finally to insert all content in an individual layout. Users can choose from a number of preinstalled templates for an immediate solution or create their own individual programs. The software is easy to use and offers enhanced functionalities in order to optimize audio and video displays. It contains integrated scheduling and calendar functions so that certain content can be planned accordingly to be played on specific days.

Steele utilized 13 DSCs with 13 flat screens, which were strategically mounted in the lobby of the DCPA. Many display panels were installed into the wall in order to give an optimal presentation so they act as posters on the wall. Others were built into kiosks outside of the theater entrances. The 13 single DSCs were inconspicuously mounted behind each display. The devices use up very little energy (less than 2 watts) and are protected from overheating.

During the planning and installation, BTX set up an intensive training program for the employees at the DCPA. “We completed an intensive learning program with the DSC software functions”, explains Cliff Wernet, regional sales manager for BTX. “I can finally say that the unique functions, versatility, user-friendliness, and the pricing of the DSCs really convinced us. The decision to use Gefen hardware was definitely the right choice.”

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts comprises the Denver Center Attractions and the Denver Center Theatre Company. The first offers about 750.000 guests first class entertainment in the form of Musicals and other shows, while the Theater Company is training actors.

On the road with Gefen

September 11, 2012 - With over 2.000 shows in more than 400 cities, the pop band Liquid Blue from San Diego is the busiest music group in show business. In order to give their audience a perfect live show, the band needs the most up-to-date technology and dependable products-even in the background. He has direct audio access on stage with his laptop, while the equipment is conveniently located at a distance backstage.

A CAT-5 cable can send audio data to a laptop over a distance of 22 meters- a much longer range than traditional USB cables.

“The Gefen USB 2.0-Extender is easy to use and work flawlessly”, says “The Grovler”. “I used this device for the first time at a show in Las Vegas. We performed at a party for an important event and with the USB-hub from Gefen I could input the audio data from a distance of 20 meters without technical disruptions. This was especially important that we have a smooth show since we were just chosen as ‘Entertainer of the Year’ one hour before.”

With the Gefen USB 2.0-Extender, data can be sent by USB-port with only one cable at a distance up to 100 meters. The compact hardware (sender and receiver) can be installed in minutes and transmits data up to 480mbits/sec. It is compatible with operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Through its downward capability, older devices can be applied by the USB 1.1-Standard. The user has fast and easy access to temporary connected devices in a multitude of cases. Aside from its on-stage use, it is also ideal for home and office use and is compatible with devices such as laser printers, scanners, internet camera’s, external storage devices, CD/DVD and USB flash sticks.
