Long-Distance Fiber Optic Extension: Extends DisplayPort signals up to 1000 feet (300 meters) over two strands of 50/125µm multi-mode (OM2/OM3) fiber optic cable and up to 500 feet (150 meters) with 62.5/125µm (OM1) fiber.

How It Works

The Gefen DisplayPort Extender system uses two main components, a

Sender module and a Receiver module, to transmit video over long distances. The setup is straightforward:

 

First, connect your computer or other DisplayPort source to the

Sender module using a DisplayPort cable. Then, connect your high-definition display to the Receiver module with another DisplayPort cable.

 

Next, you'll link the two modules together. Connect two strands of a multi-mode LC-terminated fiber optic cable from the Sender to the Receiver. It's important to match the ports correctly, connecting port A on the Sender to port A on the Receiver, and port B to port B.

 

Finally, provide power to both units. You can use the included 5V DC power supplies for each module or, alternatively, power them using the included USB to DC power cables connected to a suitable USB port. Once you turn on all your equipment, a vibrant, high-definition picture will appear on your remote display.

Source & Display

 

You'll need a source device, like a computer, that has a DisplayPort output. You'll also need a high-definition display with a DisplayPort input.

 

Fiber Optic Cabling

 

The cable you need depends on the distance you're extending the signal:

 

  • For up to 1000 feet (300 meters): Use two strands of 50/125µm multi-mode (OM2/OM3) LC-terminated fiber optic cable.
  • For up to 500 feet (150 meters): Use two strands of 62.5/125µm multi-mode (OM1) LC-terminated fiber optic cable.

Power

 

You have two options for powering the Sender and Receiver modules:

 

  • Use the two included 5V DC power supplies, which requires an available electrical outlet for each unit.
  • Alternatively, you can use the included USB power cables with a USB device capable of supplying 5V at 500mA for each module.
